Book 1

DRAGON GUARD

Injured on the battlefield, as I waited for Hel’s archers to finish us off, I reached out and grabbed the hand of my friend. We were finished. Hel had slain the Valkyrie. My friend slipped a ring over my blood-soaked finger and activated it. One moment I was watching the arrow zoom towards my eyes, and the next, I was in the land of Faerie.

Time passed. I fought creatures at every turn and earned myself a safe place in this mystical world ruled by magic, despite having no magic of my own. Then one day, I was torn out of the fae realm. I, and these creatures, found ourselves among mortals, where magic rules a little less than technology, iron, and salt. Humans needed protection from the worst of the creatures, and I didn’t hesitate.

These days, I live with my eighteen year old son on Greenland, where I maintain a crew of scientists and newly-added security personel. Our job has been to watch over three sleeping dragons, but thanks to the warming of the oceans and the melting of the sheet ice, the dragons are showing signs of waking. And they’re not the only dangerous creatures on the island. The changing climate has other hungry beasts on the prowl.

My son thinks he’s like me and can take on the world. But he’s no Valkyrie. We used to get along so well, but lately he refuses to listen to me. I shouldn’t have been surprised when he snuck aboard a transport. The transport was attacked by a beast that killed nearly everyone, while my son went missing.

The head of security and a small team insist on accompanying me, wanting vengeance for their fallen friends and co-workers. I should go alone, but my own emotions are high, and I’m worried I’ll miss an important clue. The head of security has been a particular thorn in my side since his arrival, and I really don’t want him with me, but I accept a temporary alliance.

Soon into our journey, I discover this group has trust issues of their own, and their cohesion is not as it seemed.

To get my son back before the dragons wake, I have to find the traitor in the group before they tear each other apart. To say nothing of surviving the island’s monstrous beasts.

Welcome to my midlife crisis.
